The Bastion of Liberty
Historical exhibition

Once again open to visitors, the Citadella atop Gellért Hill stands reborn as one of Budapest’s most recognisable landmarks. What has emerged is not merely a repaired structure, but a place reimagined. Open, welcoming and layered with new experiences, the Citadella now invites visitors to enjoy moments of quiet reflection as much as sweeping views across the capital.

As a result of the transformation, green spaces across the site have expanded to one and a half times their former size, while within the fortress walls a new public park of more than 6,000m² has taken shape. Café, visitor amenities and communal spaces now animate the Citadella. Opening the historic walls has rendered the fortress physically — and symbolically — more permeable. On the eastern side, a striking staircase leads up, allowing visitors to enter the courtyard and the park directly from the Liberty Statue.
New viewing terraces now frame the city from multiple vantage points, revealing Budapest in near-total panorama. Within the Western Gun Tower, a permanent exhibition titled The Bastion of Liberty occupies more than 1,700m², presenting Hungary’s history and struggles for liberty. The Liberty Statue ensemble has likewise undergone comprehensive conservation after decades of neglect. A cross placed upon the pedestal of the principal figure introduces a layer of symbolic meaning, referencing 1100 years of Hungary’s statehood, its western Christian heritage and its place within European culture. As part of the renewal, the surrounding terraces have been redesigned to harmonise with the Citadella’s reborn landscape, uniting monument and setting.
